About the Painting:

“Venus: Nothing To Wear”

“Venus: Nothing To Wear” narrates the tale of a contemporary Botticelli’s Venus. She leverages her beauty to earn a living by selling clothing online as a high-end influencer on her social media platforms. Her classical renaissance halo is ingeniously transformed into the swipe-up icon. She offers luxury apparel, yet these sustainable items are aspirational garments beyond the financial reach of most viewers. Consequently, the audience turns to fast fashion, which is more affordable. In the background, the beaches of Ghana blaze with our discarded garments, crafted from cheap labor and fabric meant for disposal. The fast fashion industry manipulates the consumer as its scapegoat. As we mindlessly scroll through our feeds, garment workers, second-hand clothing vendors in West Africa, and even we, the viewers, bear the repercussions. Venus, too, becomes a target for trolls. The industry prevails. Fast fashion remains profitable, providing no incentive to decelerate, even as it wreaks havoc on our world.

About the Artist:

Sheila Flaherty, is an award winning, international, figurative, hyperrealist artist based in Dublin, Ireland.

Flaherty’s artwork is shown in the most prestigious, international art galleries and museums. Her paintings hang in Modportrait 2023 at MEAM, Barcelona, Flesh on Artsy with 33 Contemporary Gallery, the Royal Institute of Oil Painters group show, Mall Galleries London 2023, MiniARTures exhibition with Fikva 2024 in WG Gallery, Dordrecht, The Netherlands and RHA Annual Exhibition, Ireland 2023. She has an upcoming group show “WOMEN” in Canada with James Baird Gallery.

She has exhibited at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2023 and she was awarded an honourable mention for her painting “Choices” by the Almenara Art Prize.

Her contributions extend beyond the studio, with publications like “American Art Collector” and features in “The LEONARDO Art Guide” and “Beautiful Bizarre Magazine”showcasing her talent.
